The Value of Pinpoint, Told by a Chaplain

As a chaplain, I walk into some of the most tender and emotionally charged moments in this hospital. I sit with people during grief, fear, loss, confusion, trauma, and sometimes anger. My role is to bring comfort, presence, and peace. But emotional intensity doesn’t always stay predictable. A conversation can shift quickly. A grieving family member can become overwhelmed. A patient in crisis can react in ways neither of us expect.

Unlike many clinical roles, I often enter rooms alone, without a partner or team nearby. My work takes me into quiet corners, small rooms, waiting areas, and bedside conversations where vulnerability, both theirs and mine, is very real. I want to feel safe while offering the safety of my presence.

A Quiet Way to Ask for Help

My work depends on trust, sensitivity, and calm. I can’t break a moment by pulling out a phone or stepping into the hallway. And I can’t risk escalating someone’s distress by visibly calling for help. I need a safety system that is:

  • Discreet. One subtle press, no visible signals.
  • Immediate. If emotions turn into unpredictable behavior, help must be seconds away.
  • Accurate. Colleagues need to know exactly where I am, a specific room, not just a unit.
  • Simple. In moments of strong emotion, I can’t manage a complicated device or process.

Pinpoint fits into my work seamlessly, without disrupting the sacredness of the moments I’m invited into.

Why the Two-Tier Alert System Matters in Spiritual Care

Not all emotional intensity is dangerous, much of it is simply human. But sometimes a conversation begins to feel unsafe. Or a family dynamic turns volatile. Or a patient in crisis needs more support than I can offer alone.

  • De-escalation alerts allow me to quietly request support, another chaplain, a nurse, or a member of the care team, without alarming the person in front of me.

This helps:

    • Keep the moment calm
    • Maintain dignity for patients and families
    • Prevent escalation
    • Support healthy processing of grief, anger, or fear
    • Ensure I’m never isolated in an emotionally volatile situation
  • Panic alerts are there for moments when a situation crosses into aggression or danger. If that happens, I can summon urgent help without saying a word, protecting both myself and the people I’m supporting.

Why Privacy Matters Deeply in Spiritual Care

Confidentiality is the cornerstone of my work. I hear stories people have never shared before. I sit in silence during their most vulnerable moments. I cannot and will not use a system that tracks me everywhere I go. I need technology that:

  • Respects confidentiality
  • Shares my location only when I initiate an alert
  • Does not track me during my rounds
  • Upholds the dignity of spiritual care

Pinpoint’s privacy-first design allows me to stay protected while preserving the sanctity of my conversations.

What Pinpoint Means for Me as a Chaplain

Pinpoint represents safety without losing compassion, protection that supports healing. It means:

  • I can enter emotionally heavy conversations without fear
  • I’m never truly alone in unpredictable moments
  • Support is available the instant I need it
  • My presence can remain peaceful, not anxious
  • I can care for others without compromising my own safety
  • Leadership recognizes that spiritual care carries risk too

When I feel safe, I can show up more fully for the people who need me. Knowing help is only a discreet press away allows me to walk into any room with confidence and compassion.
